In the name of "blog work" (which is a real thing) I took the official Sugared Escape promotions manager aka my very enthusiast sister who shall from this point forward be known as min SE, off on an adventure to the best of the best that Sydney bakeries had to offer.
Unfortunately for us, the more hidden away and difficult to navigate to, the better the bakery. Now with the official form of transport for all things sweet - the lime green beetle and a rather frantic/manic "Do we fit there?" and "We've parked a K away" conversations we made it. Lucky she loves me!
1. Brickfields
Located down a rather diverse street in Chippendale, this bakery came with a strong warning no to leave without their Persian Love Cake. As a pretty big fan of the Persian Love Cake and it romantic powers this had to be stop number one.
Brickfields has a lovely atmosphere with very trendy decor and a great range of sweet treats, breads and meals. There was some serious food envy with the soup of the day!
Only downside was the seating - with stools that swung out for you to sit on, I didn't have enough stability to prevent myself from swinging around like a small child in a park. Makes sipping your coffee a bit of a challenge.
Final Vote: Would visit again
2. Black Star Pastry
Black Star Pastry have been going from strength to strength lately with a new store at Newtown pumping out Strawberry Watermelon cake to the masses. That was the situation we rocked up to on a busy Saturday morning. Luckily they had a rather efficient system to get us in and the door quickly. Plenty of time to admire the outdoor seating while mini SE went on a lactose free adventure up King St.
Of course we had to try the Strawberry and Watermelon. With so much hype it had to be good. As someone with a reasonable passion for avoiding melons wherever possible, watermelon in cake was more of a chore than enjoyable.
I can appreciate that if you enjoyed watermelon, this cake would be amazing. Something similar to the way I feel about smashed avocado on toast. It looks good, I'm sure it tastes good for avocado eaters but just accept the fact that me and avocado will never get on.
Bonus points for being pretty though there isn't much seating for a sit down cake. Much more of a takeaway joint.
final vote: one time visit
3. Bourke St Bakery
Last stop on the adventure - one of many Bourke St Bakery's - to pick up as many treats as we could carry including some famous sausage rolls and lemon meringue pie.
Such a lovely, uncomplicated, friendly cafe with plenty of space to stretch out. Not one swinging stool here!
Anything covered in pastry was sure to be tasty.
